The “Green Pitch, Clean Future” initiative, launched by the SIBA ZeroPlastic Community, marked a significant step toward integrating environmental sustainability with sports events. Organized in conjunction with the SIBA Sixes Cricket Tournament, the project aimed to reduce plastic waste while promoting eco-friendly practices among participants and spectators.
The initiative was built around two key sub-projects like Refill and Refreshment Hub and Champions for Change, both designed to address plastic consumption and encourage sustainable alternatives in an engaging and practical manner.
The Refill and Refreshment Hub was implemented in three phases with the goal of minimizing the use of single-use plastic bottles. The first two phases took place on March 4th and 5th at Nalanda Grounds, featuring a dedicated refreshment center equipped with water filters and an ice cream stall, encouraging participants to refill and reuse instead of relying on disposable plastic bottles. The third phase was conducted on March 7th at Gatambe Grounds, where a soft drink stall further supported the initiative by promoting controlled and sustainable beverage distribution.
Complementing this effort, the Champions for Change segment was held on March 7th, where winning teams were awarded “Mee Plants” as a symbol of environmental responsibility. This thoughtful gesture emphasized the importance of clean air, greenery, and long-term ecological balance, reinforcing the message that success should go hand-in-hand with sustainability.
The project was driven by clear objectives, raising funds, reducing plastic waste, and promoting sustainable practices within and beyond the university community. By embedding environmental action into a popular sporting event, the initiative successfully captured the attention and participation of a wider audience.
By demonstrating practical and scalable solutions, the initiative serves as an inspiration for future events to adopt eco-friendly approaches, proving that even small changes in event management can contribute significantly to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
