ECORISE, an environmental awareness initiative by ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna, recently engaged students at Bandalgoda Temple, Kithalagama, in collaboration with the Integrated Development Association (IDEA). The program focused on encouraging children to adopt sustainable practices and understand the importance of protecting the environment.
The day began with a focused awareness session on waste management and plastic reduction, highlighting the impacts of plastic pollution and promoting proper waste segregation. Through clear explanations and interactive discussions, children were guided to develop environmentally responsible habits that they could carry into their daily lives.
Following the session, students participated in engaging activities designed to reinforce the key messages. A poster competition brought out their creativity, allowing over 100 children to express their ideas on environmental protection and sustainable living through art. The combination of learning and hands-on activity not only strengthened their understanding of environmental issues but also promoted teamwork, imagination, and active participation.
The project was led by Project Head Shashikala Hettiarachchi, supported by Secretary Dulashini Wimalathissa, Finance Coordinator Ravindu Deshan, and Event Coordinator A.B. Shishanika Kavindya. Visual communications and graphic design were handled by Shehani Demindi, while content writing was carried out by Senuri Unayangana. The awareness sessions were delivered with energy and clarity by presenters M.P. Kushani Kavindya Vijerathna and O.A. Nethra Dheemani Sehansa, whose interactive approach resonated strongly with the children.
Collaboration with IDEA and support from the local community at Bandalgoda Temple ensured smooth execution and meaningful outreach. ECORISE successfully fostered environmental responsibility, inspiring children to take pride in protecting their surroundings and contributing to a greener, cleaner community. The program highlighted the power of youth engagement in building sustainable habits and nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders.
