On 20th June 2025, the Zero Plastic Community of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka launched the PenBin Love project at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. This initiative marks a significant step toward promoting responsible plastic disposal and fostering sustainable habits within the university community.
The project encouraged students, lecturers, and staff members to donate their used pens instead of discarding them. The collected pens will be sorted, refilled, and reused where possible—minimizing plastic waste and offering a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new pens.
To recognize and reward meaningful participation, three contributors will be selected to receive eco-friendly gifts. This gesture aims to promote awareness and encourage continued engagement in sustainability efforts.
The PenBin Love initiative is part of the broader mission of the Zero Plastic Movement, which aims to reduce plastic waste and instill long-term environmental responsibility in educational institutions and beyond. Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka is proud to contribute to this growing movement, inspiring change both within the campus and throughout the country.
The success of the project was made possible by a dedicated student team. The initiative was led by Dulyani Jayathilaka (Project Head) and Yashodara Niroshani (Deputy Project Head), with Samadhi Kaushalya, Hiruni Weerawansha, and Asanka Gunathilake serving as Event Coordinators. Graphic design was handled by Gihani Suriyapperuma and Aadhila Ameer, while content writing was carried out by Parami Isurindi and Udeshika Sachinthani. Photography was provided by Pabodha Madhubhashini, and the event was hosted by Zamha Ameer and Mathusa Theivendran. The overall project was organized under the coordination of Nadara Dissanayake (Director of Events) and Madara Dissanayake (Director of Finance), whose guidance and leadership were instrumental in its success.
The PenBin Love project highlights how small, mindful actions can lead to meaningful environmental change. By rethinking waste and promoting reuse, the Zero Plastic Community continues to inspire a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.
