ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka Launches “Zero Root” School Club at Gothami Girls’ College, Kandy

The ZeroPlastic Community of the Open University of Sri Lanka proudly marked another milestone in its journey towards sustainability with the establishment of the “Zero Root” ZeroPlastic School Club at Gothami Girls’ College, Kandy.

Following a series of discussions with the school administration, the students expressed great enthusiasm to be part of the movement and to create an environmental impact within their school and community.

On 29th September 2025, representatives of the ZeroPlastic Community visited Gothami Girls’ College to initiate the club. The event witnessed the participation of a large number of upper school students, reflecting their eagerness to engage in sustainable practices and environmental leadership.

During the initiation, the first Board of the ZeroPlastic Club of Gothami Girls’ College was officially selected, giving structure and leadership to the newly formed student body.

The establishment of this school club represents an important step in expanding the ZeroPlastic vision of reducing plastic waste, promoting sustainability, and empowering youth to take active roles in environmental conservation. Through Zero Root, the students of Gothami Girls’ College will now be able to initiate campaigns, awareness sessions, and eco-friendly projects that contribute to a greener future.

With this launch, Gothami Girls’ College becomes part of a growing network of schools across Sri Lanka embracing the ZeroPlastic mission and fostering a new generation of environmentally responsible citizens.
