Students Take the Lead in Making Trains Plastic-Free at Ragama Railway Station

On 30th January 2026, students from the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) brought their passion for the environment to Ragama Railway Station, leading the ZeroPlastic in Train awareness campaign. Under the guidance of the ZeroPlastic National Movement the initiative aimed to reduce single-use plastic and inspire passengers and vendors to adopt eco-friendly habits during train travel.

The students engaged directly with travelers, handing out awareness materials and demonstrating alternatives to disposable plastic. Vendors were guided on reducing plastic packaging, while passengers responded enthusiastically, showing interest in keeping trains and stations clean. The campaign not only educated the public but also reinforced the proactive role of young citizens in promoting sustainability. By turning everyday travel into an opportunity for environmental action, NISD students highlighted how small steps can make a big difference in achieving a cleaner, greener Sri Lanka.
