The ZeroPlastic Community of the Open University of Sri Lanka continues to expand its school network with the successful establishment of the Zero Root – ZeroPlastic School Club at Gothami Girls’ College, Kandy, on 29th September 2025.
Following a series of discussions with the school administration, the students enthusiastically initiated their own Zero Root Club, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. The official initiation ceremony was attended by a large number of upper school students, marking a significant milestone in the school’s journey toward environmental responsibility.
In conjunction with the club’s establishment, the PenBin Love project was also launched at the school. As part of this initiative, the ZeroPlastic Community presented a PenBin Love collection bin, designed to encourage students to collect and recycle used pens. This activity underscores the importance of responsible waste management and the value of small, consistent actions in reducing plastic waste.
An awareness programme was also conducted during the event to educate students on key environmental topics, including waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable resource use. The session provided valuable insights into how individual contributions can collectively lead to meaningful environmental change.
The establishment of the Zero Root Club and the launch of the PenBin Love project at Gothami Girls’ College, Kandy, represent a collaborative effort to nurture environmentally conscious youth leaders and foster a culture of sustainability within the school community.
Through initiatives such as these, the ZeroPlastic Community of the Open University of Sri Lanka continues to inspire the next generation to take proactive steps toward building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Sri Lanka.
