Most people see trash picking as a chore. But what if we told you it’s now a global sport? Welcome to SPOGOMI – the Sport of Garbage Collection. Born in Japan, this unique competition combines environmental action with athletic spirit. Over 30 countries are participating in the SPOGOMI World Cup, turning litter picking into a high-stakes, high-energy race for a cleaner planet.
And guess what? Sri Lanka is proudly on the world map, thanks to the ZeroPlastic Movement.
We’ve been leading the charge across all nine provinces, organizing official provincial qualifiers to select Sri Lanka’s top team. These aren’t just cleanups—they’re tightly timed, rule-based competitions where teams score points by collecting and sorting waste the right way.
📍 One of the most energetic and inspiring events was the Western Province Qualifier, led by the passionate team at ZeroPlastic – University of Kelaniya. From coordination to execution, these young changemakers showed how powerful youth-led action can be when it’s backed by purpose and teamwork.
Now, all eyes are on the National Final happening on August 2. The winning team will carry our flag to Japan, representing Sri Lanka at the SPOGOMI World Cup.
This is more than a competition. It’s a movement to redefine how we think about trash, teamwork, and the power of youth. Stay tuned—Sri Lanka is ready to show the world how we turn waste into a winning cause.
