Planting Seeds of Sustainability: The “Zero Root” Movement Takes Flight at Siridhamma College, Galle
In an inspiring push toward a plastic-free future, the Zero Plastic Movement, in partnership with the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), successfully launched the “Zero Root” Orientation Programme at Siridhamma College, Galle. The event marked a milestone in grassroots environmental activism, empowering the next generation to lead the fight against plastic pollution.
Cultivating a ‘Zero Plastic’ Mindset
The orientation was designed to be more than just an educational session; it was a hands-on call to action. Students were introduced to the “Zero Root”philosophy, which emphasizes that sustainable change starts at the very foundation within our schools and homes.
Through interactive discussions, the team highlighted the critical impact of plastic waste on Sri Lanka’s biodiversity. Rather than focusing solely on global statistics, the programme brought the issue home, showing students how their daily choices directly affect their local environment.
Establishing the Foundation: The Zero Root Club Initiative
A pivotal moment of the day was the official establishment of the Zero Root Siridhamma College Club. This initiative marks a transition from a one-day awareness session to a long-term, student-led commitment. By forming this dedicated club, the movement ensures that environmental stewardship becomes a permanent part of the school’s culture. The newly appointed student leaders are now tasked with spearheading future green projects, making Siridhamma College a model for sustainability in the Galle district.
The ‘PenBin’ Initiative: Circularity in the Classroom
A standout feature of the new club’s launch was the official installation of the “PenBin”. This project targets one of the most overlooked sources of waste in schools: plastic ballpoint pens.
By introducing a dedicated collection point for used pens, the initiative moves away from the “use and throw” culture. It teaches students the value of circularity, ensuring that even the smallest items are disposed of responsibly. The enthusiasm was palpable as students participated in the first official “drop,” symbolizing their commitment to a cleaner school.
Impact and Community Engagement
The energy in the hall was a testament to the students’ eagerness for change. The session concluded with a vibrant Q&A, where young leaders shared their own ideas for reducing waste.
> “It’s not just about the big changes; it’s about the small habits we build here at school,” noted one participating student.
The successful execution of the programme was a collaborative triumph, bringing together the Zero Plastic OUSL volunteers, the dedicated staff of Siridhamma College, and local environmental advocates.
Looking Ahead
As the first “PenBin” stands proudly in the school corridors and the Zero Root Club begins its journey, it serves as a daily reminder of the collective power of youth. The “Zero Root” programme at Siridhamma College is just the beginning of a wider mission to turn every student into an environmental ambassador, ensuring a greener, more sustainable Sri Lanka for years to come.
