On 06th June 2025, the vibrant spirit of Project SPARK came alive at Seevali Vidyalaya, Hidagala, under the powerful theme: “Protect Nature and Preserve Our Future.” The event was organized as part of the ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya to educate school students on plastic pollution, sustainability, and the importance of eco-friendly living.
The event began with the warm support and kind permission of the school principal, whose encouragement paved the way for meaningful engagement. The program, conducted from 10.30 AM to 1.30 PM, brought together 112 enthusiastic students from Grades 8, 9, and 10. It was coordinated by a dedicated team of 7 volunteers and 4 organizing committee members,
who ensured that every activity was impactful and inspiring.
One of the highlights of the event was a hands-on game session designed to teach students how to distinguish between recyclable and non-recyclable materials. The students were divided into 8 groups and given a variety of mixed items. With keen observation and teamwork, they worked to sort them correctly. The competition was lively and educational, and the winning group successfully categorized 39 items, earning a special gift for their effort and accuracy.
Beyond the game, students engaged in interactive discussions about environmental conservation and the harmful effects of plastic on nature. Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn showed how young minds, when empowered, can drive meaningful change. As the program concluded, heartfelt thanks were extended to the principal, teachers, and students for their support and participation. Project SPARK left behind not just memories but a spark of awareness, a beginning of lasting change in the hearts of the next generation.
