PenBin Love started with a simple idea: collect used pens, refill them, and donate them to underprivileged schools. The goal was to show that even small actions can make a big difference in a world overwhelmed by plastic waste.
After the success of the first phase, the ZeroPlastic Community of the Open University of Sri Lanka launched the Second Wave. The project expanded to all nine regional centers, turning each center into a hub of sustainability. Students, academic staff, and non-academic staff came together to participate in this growing movement.
To celebrate participation, a raffle draw was held at every regional center. The draws were conducted transparently via live video calls, with the ZeroPlastic board, organizing committee, and regional coordinators present. Winners were chosen randomly from the pens collected — a symbol of fairness and unity across all regions.
The winners received eco-friendly gifts made from recycled materials, generously sponsored by partners who share a passion for sustainability. The recipients came from all walks of university life — a lecturer from Batticaloa, a security officer from Badulla, and a non-academic staff member from Rathnapura — showing how inclusive the initiative is.
Today, PenBin Love continues to inspire and grow. It unites people under one purpose: protecting our planet, one small step at a time. Together, we’re writing a greener, more sustainable story — one pen, one act, one heart at a time.
