*Vidyartha College Joins the Movement: “Pen Bin Love” Project Launched Successfully*
On the 27th of June 2025, *Vidyartha College, Kandy*, proudly became a part of the *ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka* by launching the impactful *“Pen Bin Love”* project within its premises.
The initiative, aimed at encouraging the responsible disposal of used pens and stationery items, addresses the rising concern of microplastic waste caused by everyday plastic usage in schools. These often-ignored plastic tools significantly contribute to long-term pollution. Through the installation of a dedicated collector bin, students are now empowered to take a small but meaningful step toward sustainability.
The event was attended by school officials, staff members, student leaders, and volunteers from the ZeroPlastic Community. During the launch, an awareness session was conducted to educate students about plastic pollution, its effects on the environment, and the importance of eco-conscious daily habits. Students showed immense interest and pledged to spread the message within and beyond the school.
What sets this project apart is its simplicity and sustainability—turning an everyday waste item into an opportunity for change. Vidyartha College’s active participation reflects their commitment to environmental stewardship and sets a valuable example for other schools in the region.
This marks another milestone in the broader mission of ZeroPlastic OUSL to integrate environmental values into education, foster responsibility, and reduce plastic waste at the grassroots level.
