Katuseya Cleanup Project By Zero Plastic Community of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka

Plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges in Sri Lanka, posing serious threats to ecosystems, biodiversity, and public health. In response to this growing concern, the Katuseya Cleanup Project was successfully carried out on 24th January 2025 by the Zero Plastic Community of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka under the guidance of Zero Plastic National Movement.

The Zero Plastic Movement, now recognized as the largest environmental volunteer network in Sri Lanka with over 11,000 members, continues to work toward building a plastic-free future through education, advocacy, and meaningful action.

The cleanup program was conducted as a physical event, bringing together dedicated volunteers, including organizing committee members and active community participants. Their collective effort reflected the growing public commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable living.

The project was made possible with sponsorship support from the new Sunflower Superstore. The partnership highlighted how local businesses can actively contribute to environmental development, demonstrating that sustainability is a shared responsibility between communities and the private sector.

From an environmental perspective, the initiative significantly reduced plastic waste in the Katuseya area, helping protect local biodiversity and minimize risks to surrounding ecosystems. Economically, the project reinforced the concept of green development by encouraging innovative and sustainable alternatives that guide businesses toward cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions.

Socially, the cleanup strengthened community participation, enhanced public awareness, and promoted healthier living conditions by reducing exposure to harmful plastic materials.

By bringing together volunteers, organizations, and local sponsors, the Katuseya Cleanup Project demonstrated the power of collective action.
