Kandy Leads the Way: ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka Drives Environmental Awareness

The ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka continues to make an impactful contribution to the nation’s sustainability journey through its latest awareness program, “Plastic, Polythene, and Their Impact,” successfully held on October 21st at the Kandy District Environmental Committee.

The session, led by Heshan Abayawardana, President of the ZeroPlastic Community (OUSL), served as an important platform to bring together leading public officials — including the District Secretary, Divisional Secretaries, Central Environmental Authority (CEA) representatives, and members of the Sri Lanka Police.

This collaborative discussion aimed to strengthen regional-level efforts toward building a Plastic and Polythene-Free Kandy District. The program highlighted the growing environmental challenges posed by plastic and polythene waste and emphasized the shared responsibility of government institutions, communities, and individuals in promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Speaking at the event, President Heshan Abayawardana underscored the importance of uniting local authorities and communities to drive policy-level change and inspire eco-friendly habits among citizens. The session also explored effective strategies for reducing single-use plastics, improving waste segregation systems, and integrating educational awareness into local development initiatives.

The event concluded on a high note, with participants reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection and collective action. The Kandy District Environmental Committee expressed its appreciation to the ZeroPlastic Community for initiating such a meaningful dialogue and inspiring government officials to take the lead in sustainability practices.

As the ZeroPlastic Community continues its mission to build a greener and cleaner Sri Lanka, programs like these mark significant steps toward a future free from plastic and polythene pollution.
