Kadugannawa Railway Station Cleanup: A Powerful Community Effort for a Cleaner Tomorrow

The historic town of Kadugannawa witnessed a meaningful act of environmental stewardship as the Kadugannawa Railway Station Cleanup Project was successfully completed, organized by the ZeroPlastic SIBA Campus Community. Twenty-five dedicated volunteers came together with a shared mission: to restore cleanliness, uplift community wellbeing, and protect one of the town’s key public spaces.

The cleanup covered the station premises and surrounding areas, where volunteers worked diligently to collect and remove waste. By the end of the project, 14 full bags of garbage had been cleared, leaving the station noticeably cleaner and creating a more welcoming environment for commuters and local residents. What began as a simple effort evolved into a powerful demonstration of the impact of collective action.

The initiative was guided by a committed organizing team, with Dilshan Thilakarathne as Project Head, supported by Sandaru Wimansa as Event Coordinator, Nirmal Senarathne as Photographer, Theja Nimanthika as Social Media Director, and Ven. Jothirathne as Videographer. Their leadership ensured smooth coordination, enabling the project to run seamlessly from planning to execution and leaving a lasting impression on participants and the community alike.

Strong partnerships were also central to the project’s success. The Kadugannawa Railway Station, Kadugannawa Municipal Council, and the PHI Office provided essential guidance, resources, and on-ground support, making the cleanup more effective and impactful.

Beyond the immediate environmental improvements, the project fostered a sense of community responsibility, teamwork, and environmental awareness. Volunteers left with renewed motivation, proving that when communities unite for a cause, meaningful change is possible.

Thanks to the efforts of the ZeroPlastic SIBA Campus Community and all involved, Kadugannawa is now cleaner, greener, and more inspiring—a testament to the power of youth-led environmental action.
