Heel-oya cleanup & awareness drive

The Heeloya Cleanup and Awareness Project was held as a collaborative effort to promote environmental protection and community engagement. Guided by Prof. Nirmala Ranasinghe, the program brought together students and professors from Nara University, Japan, the Heeloya Community-Based Tourism Village (CBT), the Zero Plastic National Movement, and our own Zero Plastic team.

Through cleanup activities, awareness sessions, and strong community participation, the project not only improved the cleanliness of Heeloya but also strengthened the bond between local residents, international students, and environmental advocates. Volunteers from the village worked hand in hand with the teams, turning the event into a celebration of people and nature.

The initiative successfully highlighted the importance of reducing plastic use, protecting natural resources, and fostering sustainable community practices. Heeloya now shines a little greener, thanks to the dedication of everyone involved.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
