Haritha Dhamma – Medin Edition Inspires Mindful Environmental Action
The Haritha Dhamma – Medin Edition, organized by ZeroPlastic – National Institute of Social Development, was successfully held on 1st February 2026 at Liyanagemulla Temple, in alignment with the sacred observance of Nawam Poya Day. This meaningful initiative thoughtfully combined Buddhist teachings with environmental sustainability, emphasizing the moral and spiritual responsibility of protecting nature through mindful living.
Approximately 10 dedicated volunteers from ZeroPlastic actively contributed to organizing and facilitating the program, while nearly 50 devotees and community members present at the temple participated in the session. The program focused on raising awareness about plastic pollution, promoting sustainable lifestyles, and highlighting the relevance of Dhamma in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the Medin Edition was the enthusiastic participation of children, who demonstrated remarkable curiosity and engagement throughout the event. They actively asked questions about ZeroPlastic, environmental protection, and the connection between Buddhist values and caring for the natural world. Their involvement added depth and energy to the discussions, underscoring the importance of nurturing environmental awareness from an early age.
Through reflective discussions and shared insights, the program highlighted how the Buddha’s teachings on mindfulness, compassion, and non-harm (Ahimsa) can guide responsible consumption and sustainable practices. Participants were encouraged to recognize environmental protection not merely as a modern obligation, but as a sacred duty grounded in spiritual values.
The Haritha Dhamma – Medin Edition marked a significant step toward strengthening community awareness and collective commitment to a plastic-free and sustainable future, reinforcing the message that mindfulness today leads to sustainability tomorrow.
