In a powerful display of youth-led environmental action, the ZeroPlastic Movement of the University of Kelaniya successfully conducted the “Green Guardians Project” on October 17, 2025, at the Bandaranayake College Main Auditorium, Gampaha. The initiative, organized by the Waste Management and Recycling Avenue, aimed to cultivate environmental awareness and promote sustainable habits among school students — the future guardians of our planet.
The program featured expert sessions by Neptune Recyclers (Pvt) Ltd, focusing on the dangers of plastic pollution, effective recycling techniques, and the importance of adopting eco-friendly lifestyles. Students participated in a range of interactive and educational activities, including a plastic waste sorting challenge, an eco-quiz, and a community pledge wall, where they shared personal commitments to protect the environment.
The event brought together a diverse audience of over 150 participants, including students, teachers, representatives from Neptune Recyclers, and members of the ZeroPlastic Executive Board. Their combined enthusiasm turned the event into a lively and impactful experience that extended beyond the school walls — inspiring broader community participation in sustainability efforts.
Despite logistical challenges and time constraints, the organizing team displayed outstanding coordination and teamwork, ensuring the program’s success from start to finish. In recognition of their valuable contribution, Neptune Recyclers (Pvt) Ltd received a token of appreciation for their continuous support in advancing environmental education.
The Green Guardians Project stands as a shining example of how collaboration between youth, educators, and industry experts can ignite meaningful change. By empowering students to become active stewards of the environment, the initiative reaffirms the ZeroPlastic Movement’s mission — to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Sri Lanka.
