Friday Light Up: Sparking Young Voices for a Greener Future

Every Friday, the ZeroPlastic Club of Viharamahadevi Girls’ College, Kandy, lights up the week — not with lamps, but with ideas that inspire change. Friday Light Up is a weekly article series written by students, for students, dedicated to protecting our planet and promoting a plastic-free future.

The initiative began with a simple question: What if environmental awareness could become a weekly habit? From that spark, Friday Light Up was born — a platform where young minds channel their creativity and environmental concern into writing that inspires change.

Each week, students from various grades contribute short articles exploring topics such as reducing plastic use, recycling, climate change, sustainable living, and community action. These articles go beyond information — they carry emotion, reflection, and motivation, reminding readers that every small action counts.

Through this initiative, students have learned not only to research environmental issues but also to express their ideas clearly and persuasively. Their voices have grown stronger, transforming them into responsible citizens and passionate advocates for sustainability.

The ripple effect of Friday Light Up has extended beyond writing. Many schools have been inspired to organize clean-up campaigns, reduce single-use plastics in canteens, and start eco-friendly clubs — turning words into real-world action.

Every article published is a spark — one that lights minds, nurtures awareness, and builds hope for a cleaner tomorrow. Friday Light Up stands as a reminder that the brightest ideas often come from young hearts determined to make a difference.

Because when students write, they don’t just tell stories — they create change. And every Friday, the future shines a little greener.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
