Empowering Young Eco Minds at Sapugoda Rathanapala Vidyalaya

The ZeroPlastic Club of the University of Ruhuna opened another meaningful chapter in its ongoing mission to build a greener future on October 8, 2025. As part of the “Way To Eco Generation – School Awareness Programme (Phase 03)”, the team conducted an inspiring awareness session at M/Sapugoda Rathanapala Vidyalaya, bringing knowledge, enthusiasm, and a renewed sense of environmental responsibility to young learners.

From 9.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., students engaged in an interactive programme supported wholeheartedly by the school principal and teaching staff. A dedicated team from the University of Ruhuna — including the Project Head, Deputy Heads, Event Coordinators, Content Writer, Graphic Designer, Photographer, and energetic volunteers — worked seamlessly to deliver a session that was both educational and inspiring.

The core message of the programme centered on the harmful effects of plastic and polythene on ecosystems, human health, and future generations. Through live discussions, visual presentations, and an open Q&A segment, the students explored simple yet powerful ways to embrace environmentally friendly habits in their daily lives. Their curiosity and willingness to learn turned the session into a lively exchange of ideas and real-world solutions.

A memorable highlight was the book giveaway, where three students who offered outstanding answers during the Q&A session were rewarded. This gesture added joy and motivation, reinforcing the value of active participation and thoughtful engagement.

With the principal’s approval, the visit concluded with the establishment of a school-based ZeroPlastic Club. Student leaders were appointed to key positions, laying the groundwork for continuous environmental action within the school community.

This initiative marks another significant step in cultivating young environmental stewards — empowering students not only to understand sustainability, but to lead it. Through programmes like this, the ZeroPlastic Movement continues to nurture a new generation committed to creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Sri Lanka.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
