A day to remember
The Award Ceremony of the ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka for the year 2025 was concluded successfully on the 23rd of January 2026. The ceremony took place from 2.30PM to 5.00PM in the evening. The ceremony was held at the Health Science Auditorium in the Colombo Regional Center of The Open University of Sri Lanka in Nawala. Over 50 volunteers participated in the event as well as close to 15 invites were present. The exquisite event was a three-hour long showcase and appreciation of the past achievements of the community in the past year.
The chief guest for the event was the Vice Chancelor of The Open University of Sri Lanka, Senior Professor Mr. P.M.C. Thilakerathne. The Director of Ethisc of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, Mr. Dulip Somirathne as well as the Director of Educational programs at the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Mr. Sanjaya Indrakumara also graced the occasion as special guests.
The Deans of the Faculties within the university as well as a delegation from the National ZeroPlastic Movement were also present at the event. Delegations from the partners of the ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka were present at the ceremony. They included SLRC, Perera & Sons, and AIA Insurance
The award for the Best Emerging ZeroPlastic University which was won at the National Movement Award Ceremony was presented to the Vice Chancelor of The Open University of Sri Lanka by the outgoing executive committee in this event. Tokens of appreciation as well as awards were distributed to the partners and advisors of the community. The Awards for the Best Director, Volunteer and awards for the media crew members were also distributed during this ceremony. Certificates were distributed to the organizing committees of the most impactful projects executed by the community during 2025. The new Executive committee was also appointed at the end of the ceremony.
The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation was the official TV media partner for the ceremony and helped publicize its execution to the mases.
Overall, the ceremony had concluded successfully with smiles all around. The guests had appreciated the scale of the event and wished the ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka more success in the years to come. This project helped establish new bonds as well as strengthen existing ones within and outside the university.
