அருள் எழுச்சி – தூய்மை புரட்சி: A Successful Clean-Up Drive at Matale
A successful community clean-up initiative titled “அருள் எழுச்சி – தூய்மை புரட்சி” (Arul Ezhuchi – Thooimai Puratchi) was organized by the ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka in conjunction with the annual Theru Festival at Matale Sri Muthumari Amman Devasthanam.
The project took place on 2nd March from 1.00 PM to 3.00 PM, with the aim of maintaining cleanliness around the temple premises and promoting environmental awareness during the festival period. Religious festivals attract a large number of devotees, which often results in an increase in plastic waste and other litter in the surrounding areas.
Recognizing this challenge, the ZeroPlastic Community organized this clean-up drive to ensure that the sacred environment remained clean and welcoming for devotees.
More than 20 dedicated volunteers participated in the initiative. With strong teamwork and commitment, the volunteers cleaned the temple surroundings and nearby streets. Their collective effort resulted in the successful collection of more than 50 kg of plastic waste from the area.
The project made a significant positive impact by reducing environmental pollution and improving the cleanliness of the festival environment. It also served as an important platform to raise awareness among the public about responsible waste management and the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
Beyond the immediate environmental benefits, the initiative highlighted the power of youth leadership and community engagement in addressing environmental challenges. The volunteers demonstrated that small but meaningful actions can create a lasting difference in protecting both nature and culturally significant places.
Overall, “அருள் எழுச்சி – தூய்மை புரட்சி” was a great success, showcasing the dedication of the ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka and reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in building a cleaner and more sustainable community.
