A United Effort Toward a Plastic-Free Future

The ZeroPlastic Community of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) continues to drive meaningful change in the fight against plastic pollution, this time taking its message to the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill capital — Kandy.

On October 21, 2025, the community conducted a special awareness program titled “Plastic, Polythene, and Their Impact” at the Kandy District Environmental Committee Meeting. The session was led by Heshan Abayawardana, President of the ZeroPlastic Community of OUSL, and brought together a wide range of stakeholders — from District and Divisional Secretaries to representatives of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and the Sri Lanka Police.

The discussion focused on one clear, ambitious goal: transforming Kandy into a Plastic and Polythene-Free District. Participants explored practical strategies for reducing single-use plastics, improving waste segregation, and promoting long-term behavioral change within communities.

More than an awareness session, the program served as a platform for collaboration, uniting government bodies, youth leaders, and environmental advocates under a shared vision of sustainability. Through open dialogue and solution-oriented discussion, the event highlighted how collective responsibility — when combined with informed action — can bring about real environmental progress.

This initiative marks yet another milestone in the ZeroPlastic Movement’s mission to build a cleaner, greener, and more conscious Sri Lanka. As the Kandy District takes this decisive step forward, it stands as a model for others to follow — showing that when communities unite, the path to a ZeroPlastic future becomes not just possible, but inevitable.
