On the edge of one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic cultural landscapes, a new idea is coming to life; one that blends sustainability, heritage, and community impact. This February 5th, ZeroPlastic proudly opens Sri Lanka’s first Plastic Alternatives & Craft Experience Center in Sigiriya, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward a plastic-free future.
More than just a physical space, the center represents a shift in how we value local skills, materials, and mindful consumption. Designed as an immersive experience, it will connect visitors with authentic Sri Lankan craftsmanship while showcasing practical, innovative alternatives to plastic. Every product, story, and interaction within the center reflects a deeper purpose: restoring dignity to traditional livelihoods and creating sustainable market access for local artisans.
The vision behind this initiative recently gained global attention with the visit of Erik Solheim, former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. His engagement with the center underscored the global relevance of grassroots solutions and community-led sustainability. It was a powerful reminder that local action can inspire international change.
This journey would not have been possible without the generous support of The Intrepid Foundation, whose partnership has helped turn a bold idea into reality. Their commitment highlights the importance of collaboration in driving meaningful, long-term impact, especially in regions where tourism and sustainability must grow hand in hand.
As the doors prepare to open, the Impact Center stands as a living example of what happens when environmental responsibility meets cultural pride. It invites travelers, communities, and changemakers alike to rethink consumption, support local creators, and be part of a future rooted in purpose rather than plastic.
This is just the beginning. Sigiriya is ready to welcome the world, not only to witness its ancient heritage, but to participate in a modern movement for change. Stay tuned as we take the next steps together.
