SIBA Campus Green Chain 26: Teaching Farmers about Plastic Harm and Planting Jackfruit Saplings

At SIBA campus, the project හරිත අත්වැල 26 brought local farmers together for a focused session on plastic reduction and handed out jackfruit saplings to support on‑farm tree planting.

The club running the project informed attendees about the problems caused by plastic use and its consequences for farms and communities. Farmers received practical information and a young jackfruit plant to take home.

Location: SIBA campus
Who: the club
Beneficiaries: local farmers

The activity combined awareness raising with a simple, tangible action. Distributing jackfruit plants aimed to promote local planting and longer term benefits for food and shade, while the education component targeted behaviour change on single use plastics.

The event connects to wider themes of environmental responsibility and community education and aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 15: Life on Land.

The club plans to keep engaging with farmers through similar outreach, pairing information with practical support to reduce plastic use and encourage planting of native fruit trees.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
