“හරිත පියසැරිය” is a community-based environmental initiative carried out in Mawella village, Tangalle, with the aim of addressing improper waste management and the growing issue of plastic pollution in the area. The project focused on increasing public awareness, reducing harmful practices such as open dumping and the burning of plastic waste, and encouraging responsible and sustainable waste management habits within the community.

The initiative was designed as a three-phase project, consisting of a community survey, awareness creation, and a village cleanup campaign. Each phase was planned to gradually engage the community while gathering essential information to ensure that the solutions introduced are practical and effective.

The first phase of the project, the community survey, was successfully completed on the implementation day. During this stage, student volunteers actively participated by dividing into smaller teams and visiting households and public spaces throughout Mawella village. Through direct interaction with residents, the volunteers observed existing waste disposal practices and recorded the types and sources of waste generated within the community.

This field-based approach enabled the project team to collect reliable and detailed data, which will guide the next phases of the initiative. The information gathered will help design targeted awareness programs and effective cleanup strategies that address the specific waste management challenges faced by the village.

Through collective effort, හරිත පියසැරිය stands as an important step toward building a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible Mawella village.
