Restore the Blue 2025

Bathalegoda Lake in Kurunegala was transformed into a hub of meaningful environmental action when ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya launched Restore the Blue 2025 on October 11, 2025. This youth-led initiative brought together passionate volunteers with one shared purpose — to protect and revive one of Sri Lanka’s valuable freshwater ecosystems.

Generously sponsored by the Bank of Ceylon (BOC), Peradeniya Branch, the project mobilized 40 dedicated participants for a lake cleanup. Their mission was clear: remove plastic and other non-degradable waste that threatened the lake’s natural beauty and ecological balance. With gloves on and determination in their hearts, volunteers worked collectively to rejuvenate the surrounding environment, leaving a visible improvement in just a few hours.

The initiative was led with commitment and precision by Project Head Bimsara Lokuliyana, supported by Deputy Project Head Prabodha Samarakoon and Secretary Arunasalam Pradeepa. Together with an energetic organizing committee, they planned and executed every aspect of the project, ensuring safety, efficiency, and meaningful impact.

Their efforts went beyond waste removal; participants were encouraged to reflect on the broader importance of conserving freshwater bodies, promoting responsible habits, and embracing sustainable living. Many expressed renewed appreciation for natural resources and a desire to continue contributing to environmental stewardship.

As the program concluded, heartfelt gratitude was extended to BOC Peradeniya Branch for their invaluable sponsorship, which played a crucial role in the project’s success.

Restore the Blue 2025 stands as a shining example of how youth leadership, community collaboration, and unwavering commitment can create positive change for the planet. Through united action, these young changemakers took a powerful step toward restoring the beauty and health of Bathalegoda Lake.
