Ride Green, Recycle Clean: Greening Sri Lanka’s Public Transport

The RIDE GREEN RECYCLE CLEAN project, launched by the ZeroPlastic NISD Community, is paving the way for a more sustainable future in Sri Lanka’s public transport sector.

With the growing threat of plastic pollution, particularly from single-use plastic bottles, this initiative aims to reduce waste in one of the country’s most visible and widely used spaces — buses, trains, and transport terminals. The project reflects a bold commitment to tackling plastic use where it matters most: in everyday routines that affect millions of commuters.

The core goals of Ride Green Recycle Clean are threefold: to raise awareness about the dangers of single-use plastics, to introduce practical recycling solutions, and to encourage commuters to adopt reusable alternatives.

Beyond the cleanup, Ride Green Recycle Clean promotes a cultural shift — showing that reducing plastic waste begins with conscious choices and collective action.

By uniting transport workers, commuters, and youth volunteers under a shared goal, this initiative demonstrates how grassroots leadership can drive national impact. Together, the ZeroPlastic NISD Community is setting Sri Lanka on a greener path.
