ZeroPlastic School Club Installation at Swarnajothi National School: Fostering a Greener Generation

On a mission to instill environmental consciousness among young learners, ZeroPlastic of University of Peradeniya successfully launched the ZeroPlastic School Club at Swarnajothi National School, Kiribathkubura on 25th August 2025. The installation ceremony, held at 7.30 AM, was a landmark initiative aimed at empowering school children to embrace sustainability and lead eco-friendly practices in their communities.

 

The event was organized with the gracious support of the school leadership and witnessed the enthusiastic participation of nearly 100students from grades 9, 10, and 11, alongside 15 teachers. The programme began with an engaging awareness session, where students were introduced to the vision of the ZeroPlastic Movement, the dangers of plastic pollution, and the role of youth in building a cleaner and greener tomorrow.

 

A symbolic highlight of the day was the appointment of the inaugural board members of the ZeroPlastic School Club, Swarnajothi National School. The positions were officially handed over to the following student leaders:

President – Samitha Nirmal

Vice President – K. P. G. Dewmini Gimhani

Secretary – E. M. Sithumi Hasara

Vice Secretary – Akindu Vishmitha

Treasurer – Gayesha Thathsaranai

Other Board Members – Selected student leaders

Adviser (Teacher) – School-appointed faculty member

 

These young leaders will now work hand-in-hand with their peers and teachers to carry forward the mission of the ZeroPlastic Movement, making their school a hub for sustainability initiatives.

 

With the combined support of the school administration, dedicated teachers, and an inspired student body, the installation marked the beginning of a powerful chapter in youth-led environmental action. By fostering eco-responsibility at an early age, the ZeroPlastic School Club at Swarnajothi National School paves the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
