PlanetPixel 2.0: A Visual Celebration of Environmental Action

Colombo, Sri Lanka , June 2025:

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, the Zero Plastic Colombo Community successfully concluded its two-phase photography competition, PlanetPixel 2.0, an initiative designed to spotlight environmental issues through the eyes of youth and emerging photographers.

The competition saw an overwhelming response with more than 150 submissions from universities, schools, and institutions across Sri Lanka and even a few international contributors. Participants were invited to submit photographs that reflected themes of environmental conservation and sustainability.

All submissions were featured on the official ZeroPlastic Colombo Facebook page, where the public was invited to vote. Based on a combination of audience engagement and panel evaluations, the top three entries were awarded cash prizes worth Rs. 10,000 which was sponsored by the Nature Club, while all participants received digital certificates in recognition of their creativity and advocacy.

The project concluded with a virtual closing ceremony held in June, featuring Mr. Lester Perera, Sri Lanka’s iconic bird artist and wildlife photographer, as the Chief Guest. His presence and words of encouragement resonated deeply with participants, emphasizing the role of art in environmental activism.

PlanetPixel 2.0 not only amplified the voices of young environmentalists but also expanded the reach of the Zero Plastic Colombo Community. The competition brought new followers, members, and partners to the cause, proving that photography can be both powerful and transformative.

“A picture may be worth a thousand words, but PlanetPixel 2.0 proved it can also spark a thousand actions.”
