At ZeroPlastic Colombo Community, we believe that true change begins not just with systems, but with mindsets and the best time to plant the seeds of sustainability is in early childhood. That belief inspired Earth Advocates, an initiative designed not for adults or teenagers, but for the littlest learners among us: preschoolers.
On the morning of June 30, the laughter and curiosity of 55 young minds filled Sara Play Town in Horana, as our volunteers engaged them in an interactive and joyful journey into environmental awareness. With passionate ZPCC volunteers guiding the way, the space transformed into a miniature green classroom where lessons were taught not through lectures, but through imagination and play.
Learning Through Play
Understanding the environment at a young age doesn’t come from textbooks it comes from tactile, memorable experiences. Children were given cardboard, paper, stickers, and their boundless creativity to create their own mini waste separation systems. They learned to recognize plastics, understand the harm of pollution, and the value of sorting waste properly.
The excitement on their faces as they proudly showcased their “eco-creations” told us one thing clearly: they got it. Every cut, every sticker, every little bin they crafted was a small but powerful step toward building a generation that cares deeply for the planet.
Sweet Endings, Lasting Lessons
To end the session on a note of joy and remembrance, each child received a small gift a handcrafted origami piece and a marshmallow treat. These were more than just souvenirs. They were symbols. Symbols that environmental awareness doesn’t have to be scary or complex it can be sweet, simple, and fun.
More importantly, these tokens were reminders that each of them, no matter how small, has a role to play in protecting our Earth.
Through Earth Advocates, we didn’t just teach children about waste and pollution. We empowered them with a sense of responsibility and possibility. At ZPCC, we don’t wait for the future, we nurture it.
🌍 Because when green minds are shaped early, a greener world is inevitable.
