Eco-Conscious Vesak Bodhi Vandana Programme 2025

In a meaningful celebration of the Vesak festival, the ZeroPlastic Community of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL), in collaboration with the Buddhist Association of SUSL, organized the Bodhi Vandana Programme on May 15, 2025, at the University Temple premises with the active participation of 37 students. The event was not only a spiritual gathering but also a shining example of how cultural and religious festivities can be conducted in harmony with nature.

This year’s Bodhi Vandana Programme stood out for its strong focus on environmental sustainability. In line with the vision of the ZeroPlastic Community, all decorations were made using eco-friendly materials, completely avoiding plastic and other non-biodegradable items. The Decoration Team used gok kola (young coconut leaves) and banana leaves as the primary elements, beautifully blending traditional aesthetics with environmental responsibility. The area around the University Temple premises was transformed into a serene space of worship, adorned with handmade lanterns (crafted from gok kola), traditional oil lamps, and natural floral offerings—all created with minimal impact on the environment.

The program was carried out under the leadership of Nadara Dissanayake (Director of Events for the ZeroPlastic Community), and with the support of Akesh Hansaka ( President of the Buddhist Association of SUSL). It was supervised by Tharushi Hewage (Vice President) and Tharusha Yuwanga( President of the ZeroPlastic Community).Their guidance ensured smooth coordination and meaningful engagement throughout the event.

To ensure the success of the Bodhi Vandana Programme, several dedicated support teams were formed. Each contributing with great commitment and teamwork. The Sarasili Kamituwa (Premises Decorations Team) beautifully transformed the surroundings using gok kola and banana leaves, creating a calm and spiritual atmosphere. The Vesak Lantern-Making Team handcrafted elegant, eco-friendly lanterns that lit up the evening with warmth and devotion. The Pooja Kamituwa was responsible for organizing the religious rituals with great care and reverence, while the Refreshments Team served all participants with simple and thoughtful offerings. The collaboration and dedication of these teams played a key role in making the event both meaningful and memorable.

The Bodhi Vandana Programme of 2025 will be remembered not just for its spiritual significance, but also as a gentle reminder that we can protect both our values and our environment—together.
