Commemorating World Cleanup Day, Zero Plastic moment launched 12 island-wide cleanup projects simultaneously in the country on the 17th of September 2022. For that, Zero Plastic Ruhuna was engaged with that day, taking Matara beach as the base.
That morning a group of about 260 volunteers gathered near the Matara beach. The people gathered there were divided into three groups according to their preferences, two groups contributed to cleaning and the remaining group conducted a survey.
As the last stage of the project, the volunteers were treated with king coconuts and short eats as a refreshment. Through this project, the group was made aware of the Zero Plastic movement to promote proper waste disposal, waste management, and waste recycling. They especially focused on reducing plastic pollution to make this city a healthy and attractive place.
